THERE IS A NEED TO APPRAISE PROGRESSIVE LEADERSHIP ACTIONS – PSSDC
The Director-General, Lagos State Public Service Development Centre (PSSDC), Magodo, Dr. Senukon Olufunmi Ajose-Harrison, has stated that there is a need to reexamine the issue of appropriate and progressive leadership actions to ensure good governance and sustainable economy in the State and the Nation as a whole.
Ajose-Harrison made this known in his address at the maiden lecture on Leadership for Good Governance Series organised by PSSDC, noting that the world today is undergoing a leadership crisis, which has made some countries and organisations static and even backward in every area of life.
He said the call for strong and progressive leadership in society led the management of the Centre to moot the idea of a leadership programme, stressing that the State Government came up with the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda to address issues of socio-economic development of the fifth largest economy in Africa.
While noting that the event would be a valuable means to achieve good leadership and a sustainable economy in the State and Nigeria, Ajose-Harrison listed the traits that an ideal leader should exhibit to enhance development as intelligence, toughness, determination, vision, new media literacy, innovation, creativity and integrity, among others.
The Guest Speaker and Social Human Rights Activist, Barrister. Femi Falana (SAN), who spoke on the topic: “Leadership and Alternative Ideology: The Role and Significance of Ideology in administering the Nation State-Nigeria”, urged the government both at the State and Federal levels to exhibit the traits of good leaders by being selfless, enjoin equity and make sacrifices.
According to him, the world is expecting Nigeria to lead, not to follow but, unfortunately, the country is not living up to this billing, despite the fact that this Nation is hugely blessed with human and material resources to take the lead.
He pointed out that for Nigeria to develop, the leaders must initiate and support a knowledge-based economy by ensuring that citizens, especially the youths, acquire knowledge to improve society.
Speaking in the same vein, the Chairman of the event and World-Renowned Economist, Prince Lekan Fadina, raised the issue of equipping the youths with the necessary knowledge to ensure development in the State and the Country at large, noting that youths must be encouraged to develop their skills and capabilities to positively shape the future of the continent.
Fadina noted that Nigeria is passing through various challenges in areas of youth bulge, education, unemployment, security, fairness, equity, governance and politics, adding that leaders must engage in conversations and experience sharing for a common vision.
