DELEGATION FROM CONSULATE GENERAL OF THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA PAYS COURTESY VISIT TO AIG FCID ANNEX LAGOS, REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO STRENGTHENING NIGERIA–CHINA RELATIONS | Blissful Affairs Online
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Lagos, AIG Simeon U Akpanudom psc fdc mspsp MNIM FCAI, has received a delegation from the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos on a courtesy visit aimed at further strengthening the cordial relationship and cooperation between the Nigeria Police Force and the People’s Republic of China, particularly in the areas of security, culture, economic development and people-to-people relations.
The delegation was led by Ms. Yan Yuqing, Consul General the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, accompanied by Second Secretary Alexander Liu Kai and Third Secretary Ricky.
During the visit, Ms. Yan Yuqing expressed appreciation for the warm and longstanding bilateral relations between Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China. She spoke fondly of Nigeria, particularly Lagos, where she has had the opportunity to interact with people from different cultural backgrounds and appreciate the rich diversity of the country.
The Consul General commended the Nigeria Police Force, particularly the FCID Annex, which she said the first time to visit, for its pivotal role in maintaining law and order, combating crime and ensuring a safe environment for citizens, residents and foreign nationals. She specifically appreciated the efforts of the Police in providing security for Chinese nationals, businesses and other interests operating in Nigeria.
Ms. Yan Yuqing disclosed that the Consulate was exploring the organisation of a special cultural exchange programme and seminar on capacity development for exporting to China (III), designed to further deepen the existing relationship between Nigeria and China. She noted that the proposed programme would feature relevant and engaging topics, with opportunities for Nigeria Police officers to participate, share professional experiences and benefit from knowledge exchange. She added that similar initiatives had been developed in other African countries.
The Consul General also formally invited the AIG and members of the FCID Annex leadership to the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China celebrations, describing the occasion as an opportunity to further promote cultural understanding and friendship. She further expressed the Consulate’s willingness to host the AIG and members of the leadership team to experience and appreciate various aspects of Chinese culture and cuisine.
As part of its commitment to the welfare of Police personnel, the Chinese Consulate also offered a medical outreach programme focusing on eye health, through which FCID personnel would benefit from eye screening and other relevant basic eye-care services.
The Consul General further highlighted the importance of the enduring China–Africa partnership and broader international cooperation, noting the significance of the anniversary of the longstanding collaboration between China and Africa. She reaffirmed China’s commitment to contributing to social and economic development, including initiatives that create employment and economic opportunities, particularly for women and young people.
She expressed optimism about the future of Nigeria–China relations and emphasised the importance of continued collaboration among security agencies in both countries. She also noted the significance of high-level engagements between Nigeria and China in advancing mutual interests and strengthening bilateral ties.
The Consul General stated that the Chinese community looks forward to sustaining a strong partnership with the Nigeria Police Force and pledged continued cooperation, particularly through the provision of timely and relevant information that could assist the Police in crime prevention, intelligence gathering and criminal investigations.
In his response, the AIG, AIG Simeon U. Akpanudom, warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation to the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos for the courtesy visit and its continued commitment to strengthening relations with the Nigeria Police Force.
The AIG acknowledged the cordial and friendly relationship that has existed between Nigeria and China over the years and assured the delegation of the Police Force’s continued commitment to sustaining the relationship while ensuring a secure environment for Chinese nationals, businesses and other foreign residents in Nigeria.
AIG Akpanudom welcomed the proposed cultural exchange and capacity development seminar, noting that such initiatives would provide valuable opportunities for knowledge sharing, professional interaction, capacity building and stronger institutional cooperation between both countries.
He also welcomed the proposed medical outreach, particularly the eye-care component, noting that FCID personnel would greatly appreciate and benefit from the initiative.
The AIG expressed appreciation for the invitation to the Chinese National Day celebrations and welcomed the opportunity to experience and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of the People’s Republic of China.
He further encouraged the Chinese Consul General and members of the Chinese community to continue providing timely information and necessary assistance to the Police in the course of investigations, stressing that effective information sharing and cooperation remain critical to preventing and combating crime and ensuring the safety of all residents.
The AIG also expressed support for initiatives aimed at promoting the learning of the Chinese language among Police personnel, noting that improved language skills would enhance communication, mutual understanding and operational synergy between the Nigeria Police Force and the Chinese community.
The courtesy visit concluded on a positive note with both sides reaffirming their commitment to deepening cooperation through security collaboration, cultural exchange, information sharing, capacity building, staff welfare initiatives and people-oriented programmes.
The visit also featured the presentation of a commemorative plaque, symbolising the shared commitment of both parties to strengthening the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China.
