.. Advises Workforce to Embrace Current Trends

The Lagos State Government has commenced another round of virtual training for its workforce with the theme “Evolution Series: A New Generation of Public Service”.

Speaking during the opening session of Evolution Webinar series, the Honourable Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Mrs. Ajibola Ponnle stated that the online training programme was designed to enhance capacity development of the workforce as well as sharpen their skills and keep them mentally active during the COVID-19 lockdown period.

According to her, the initiative underscored the disposition of the present administration to continually expand the horizons of staff as they remain at home in compliance with the stay-at-home directive of the Federal Government.

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Establishments and Training, Mr. Abiodun Bamgboye, in his remarks, acknowledged the peculiarity of the special webinar series, noting that it focuses on current trends in the world of work and workplace, unlike the previous series that addressed resilience in adversity.

Bamgboye also pointed out that the series has continued to record steady increase in the numbers of participants as 1551 registered for the programme and 925 were in attendance.

The Moderator of the Evolution Webinar Series 1.0 and CEO/Registrar, Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM), Mrs. Busola Alofe, enjoined public servants to improve themselves and acquire more knowledge in relation to the current digitalisation of work and workplace by the government.

She explained that the world of work is evolving with new trends as new technology is being developed every day, therefore, workers must strive hard to keep up with the development in order not to be left behind in the scheme of things.

Mrs. Oluwafunke Amobi, a Resource Person and Country Head, Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc, in her presentation titled “Current Trends in the World of Work and Workplace”, explained that the Work, Worker and Workplace are the three products that define the quality of every type of work.

She recalled that back in the days, use of computer was scarce, but now everyone and even toddlers have access to modern gadgets of technology for use both personally and in the workplace, signifying that the world of work is changing day in, day out.

“The introduction of a number of policies and programmes by the Lagos State Public Service has affirmed her readiness to align with current trends in the world, hence only employees who embrace the digitalisation of work and workplace will not only survive but will thrive”, Amobi stated.

She averred that new behaviours, new technologies, the millennial workforce, mobility and globalisation are the new trends shaping the world of work and the more workers embrace these new technologies, the more work becomes easier.

While imploring the Lagos State Government to invest more in new digital activity for its workforce, Amobi enjoined participants not to depend totally on their employer to acquire more knowledge but to take the initiative by accessing several websites for free courses to build their capacity in digital literacy.
