Police arrest 20 youths over Oro festival crisis in Ogun | Blissful Affairs Online

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, said on Saturday that no fewer than 20 youths have been arrested following a clash with security operatives in Ikenne, Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.

Some youths stormed the streets to protest a ban on the Oro festival in the community.

The ban, it was gathered, was meant to forestall a clash during the festival since there had been tension following a kingship contest.

However, some youths on Saturday stormed the streets, demonstrated against the ban and began burning tyres on the major road.

In the process, they clashed with police operatives in the community and were then arrested.

Alamutu said: “We are very much aware of the situation, it is a fallout of the longstanding obaship crisis in the town and recently, the court dismissed the one currently on the throne but the judgement had been appealed.

“So, based on the tense atmosphere, the local government, which is the consenting authority for the festival, said that it should not be celebrated so that it won’t lead to any breach of peace. We did the same thing last year but some youths who were misguided decided they must have their way.

“We have arrested 20 of them, impounded two vehicles and everyone will soon be brought to the state command at Eleweran, Abeokuta, to answer for their misdeeds.”
