LAGOS COOPERATIVE COLLEGE SET TO HOLD MAIDEN CONVOCATION

The Provost of Lagos State Cooperative College, Mr. Akorede Ojomu, has stated that 104 students would be graduating from the Professional Diploma Class at its maiden convocation ceremony scheduled to hold on Thursday, April 7, 2022.

Speaking at a press briefing organised to herald a series of activities lined up to celebrate the event, which was held at the conference room of the College at Agege, Lagos, Ojomu said a breakdown of the performance of the graduating students shows that 26 students passed with distinction, 45 in Upper Class, 25 will go home with Lower Class while the remaining eight received a Pass.

He said that the College was set up to address specific skill gaps in the cooperative movement by providing specialised training to build highly skilled manpower with capacity for self-employment and job creation.

In his words: “You would agree with me that within the comity of tertiary educational institutions in the State and Country as a whole, the Lagos State Cooperative College falls into a specialised category. This is in consideration of the fact that it was established to address sector-specific skill gap through the provision of specialised training for a cooperative sub-sector that is oftentimes not on the radar of the financial or conventional media”.

Other activities lined up for the convocation programme, according to Ojomu, include the conferment of Honorary Awards of Fellowship on five eminent personalities for their roles in the founding and development of the College.

He listed those to be awarded the Fellowship Award as the former Commissioner for Agriculture and Cooperatives and the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Gbolahan Lawal; former Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye; retired Permanent Secretaries: Mr. Wale Raji, Dr. Yaqub Bashorun and Mr. Lekan Akodu.

“Also, Cooperators in the State would also have the opportunity to network and celebrate the movement with a lecture titled: “The Roles and Responsibilities of Cooperative Stakeholders in Lagos State” which will hold on Tuesday, 5th April, 2022″, he revealed.

The Provost also disclosed that the maiden Convocation Lecture, titled: “Concern For The 21st Century Economy: What Roles Do Cooperatives Have to Play in the Transition to a Sustainable Economy”, would be delivered by the Chief Executive Officer and Principal of the United Kingdom Cooperative College, Mr. Neil Calvert on the 6th of April.
