The Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, has organised a training workshop on logistics for 55 healthcare providers as part of efforts geared towards curbing the spread of the deadly Coronavirus disease.

The interactive training session, held on Thursday within the facility, was targeted at enlightening participants selected from all cadres, on the novel viral infection and the prescribed methods for curbing the spread in view of the anticipated patient-influx at the hospital, following the partial lifting of lockdown in the State by the Federal Government effective from next week Monday.

Speaking at the workshop, the Medical Director, Alimosho General Hospital, Dr. Madewa Adebajo stated that the initiative was designed based on a series of training sessions organised by the State Ministry of Health and the Health Service Commission for top medical staff on proactive medical discoveries, which will also benefit subordinate healthcare providers within the hospital.

While relating the physiology of the viral transmission, Dr. Adebajo said that COVID -19 has four ways through which its spread can be triggered, namely: Through Direct Contact, Indirect Spread, Droplets and Airborne spread.

He, however, maintained that COVID-19 is not absolutely airborne like other suspected infections such as tuberculosis, rather by droplets dispelled through inhalation from an infected person, which necessitated the call for physical distancing as a proper order of prevention required.

According to him, “The COVID-19, being a novel disease, has various researches still being conducted to support the veracity of being airborne. But its presentation could come without symptoms in victims who transmit to others without knowing”.

Adebajo averred that the upper respiratory tract could be compromised from the spread of Coronavirus disease by contaminated fingers, which are inserted inadvertently into the nose, mouth or eyes, hence, the need for standard precautions to be observed always by regular hand washing with soap and water and use of alcohol-based sanitisers.

While harping on the use of face masks as protective equipment, Adebajo informed participants that “if a mask is worn by both Patients and Doctors, the percentage of viral spread is 15%. Thus, all measures of control, such as Administrative, Environmental and Engineering controls should be imbibed at all Points Of Care Risks Assessment (POCRA), while being cognisant of the rationale behind PPE worn”.

The Medical Director promised that Alimosho General Hospital will continue to provide PPEs for the staff irrespective of work stations, adding that personnel in the Labour Ward would also be provided with full face cover masks for use whilst attending to hyper-ventilated patients during natural births, since they cannot cover their mouths in such excruciating delivery State.
