GENERAL HOSPITAL EPE DISCHARGES FIRST OF TRIPLETS DELIVERED IN Y2022
… Medical Director Attributes Success to MCC Facility
The General Hospital, Epe, has discharged the first set of triplets delivered at the facility about 55 days ago as preterm weighing less than 1kg each.
Speaking on the development, the Medical Director/CEO of the Hospital, Dr. Oluseyi Adesola, averred that provision of the Maternal Childcare Centre (MCC) by the Lagos State Government has contributed immensely to the success recorded so far, noting that it would have been practically impossible to nurture babies weighing 0.6 grams at birth without modern facilities and dedicated medical personnel.
Speaking further, Dr. Adesola said: “We are grateful to God for preserving the lives of these babies who were delivered 55 days ago and have been in intensive care due to their low birth weight. One of the babies that weighed 0.6 grams at birth now weighs 1.9kg. We were determined to ensure that they get the best care and, fortunately, we have with us medical personnel who are dedicated, supportive and keenly interested in the survival of these babies”.
“I won’t fail to say kudos to the Lagos State Government for this facility and for investing massively in the health sector. The present administration has done exceedingly well and deserves commendation. We have virtually all we need to welcome quadruplets if need be. With the MCC in place, we are now recording a low mortality rate”, he added.
While commending the medical team, the Medical Director noted that their dedication to work is second to none, because they kept working relentlessly to ensure that the babies survive.
He also emphasised the need for residents of Epe and environs to subscribe to the Ilera-Eko Health Insurance Scheme, stating that it has a direct positive impact on maternal mortality and that the benefits outweigh its cost implications.
The Head of Paediatrics Department, Dr. Babatunde Busayo, said that while the babies were under intensive care a lot was anticipated, especially with their low birth weights, but thankfully the triplets have survived and given everyone a reason to smile.
She, however, appealed to the State Government for more medical workers, especially nurses, saying: “The survival of preterm also depends on the care given to them by nurses. Normally it ought to be one nurse to four babies but here we have one nurse attending to lots of babies at a time. We need the government to employ more nurses”.
Mrs. Yesirat Onibeju, the mother of the triplets, thanked God for the successful delivery and all members of the medical team for their love and support. She also expressed her gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the MCC.
