Civil servants in Lagos immediately started lamenting the moment they received their overdue salary (minimum wage) for the month of November, which came in on Saturday, November 30, 2019.
Peoples & Politics recall that Lagos State government usually pays workers’ salary on or before 23rd of every month.
November salary was however delayed, the remote cause which was said to be the decision of the Lagos State Government to adjust the salary scale to the much expected minimum wage.
In a circular No: 098, issued on Wednesday, November 27, from the Office of the Head of Service, signed by Hakeem Muri-Okunola, the circular revealed that the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu in his determination to improve the welfare and wellbeing of all Public Servants in Lagos State has graciously approved the implementation of the new minimum wage, with effect from November 1, 2019.
Noting that payment of salaries for the month of November was delayed to adequately process payment of the new minimum wage.
The statement added that the approved new minimum wage and consequential adjustments are more than the Federal Government’s approved recommendation.
Grade Levels adjusted as follows 07…30%, 08-10…25%, 12-14…22.5%, 15-17…20%
Meanwhile, civil servants who spoke with People & Politics said what they got isn’t what they bargained.
The civil servants who craved anonymity acknowledged receipt of salary alert but with utmost dissatisfaction. One of them a GL8 civil servant said she didn’t understand the Lagos State calculations/workings of percentage at all.
“I expected a 25% increment but I only got N4000 increase, I don’t understand at all,” he said.
“I got only N1000 addition to my pay. I can’t understand the essence of the wait, this is disturbing,” another person lamented.
Another GL8 civil servant said she received N7200 as added sum against expectation. “This is disheartening”, she told People & Politics.
