Zamfara State University Talata Mafara, Challenges then, and Current progress.

All is well now as His Excellency Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle of Zamfara State has directed the mass recruitment of Academic and Non academic staff into the State University, Talata Mafara. This new development is set to improve the standard of teaching in the State, in addition to upbringing the number of qualified lectures in the Institution. This will directly translate to increase in number of good students both academically and morally.

(YARI’S MOTIVES BEHIND CREATING THE UNIVERSITY)

It is in records that out of the 36 States of the Federation, only Zamfara State has no functional State University. The administration of Abdul-Aziz Yari Abubakar has secured an approval from NUC to establish State own University in 2018, which was highly welcomed by the entire indigenes of the State.

Even though it was politically located at his home town for selfish interest just to enrich himself as Dubious contracts for the construction of structures in the University were awarded to friends and relatives.

This resulted into waste of resources as he could not secure any financial grant from the NUC.

In process, , Prof Bilbis was the only appointment made in the entire University. From the creation to the end of his tenure, there was no Governing Board neither the principal officers to manage the affairs of the Institution effectively and efficiently.

With the assumption of this administration in 2019, Gov Matawalle then immediately appointed Prof MUAZU Gusau of the Dept of Biochemistry of UDUS as the substantive Vice Chancellor, as well as Registrar, Bursar and other principal officers with a view to continuing the academic activities. However, in order to make the institution more productive, in February, 2021, Governor Matawalle also approved the appointment of the second Vice Chancellor Prof. Yahaya Zakari, from UDUS to take over from MUAZU who moves to Fed University, Gusau. He introduced series of courses from various fields of academic learning where most of the courses were accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

It is interesting to note that, amid security challenges and meager resources, Gov Matawalle has recently gave the go ahead to recruit academic and non academic staff.
