WORLD CULTURE DAY: SANWO-OLU TO SUPPORT INDIVIDUALS, GROUPS IN SUSTAINING LAGOS CULTURE

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains committed to supporting individuals, groups and institutions in sustaining the State’s cultural heritage.

The assertion was made by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Solomon Bonu, at a seminar organised in commemoration of the Y2021 World Culture Day, themed: “Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Tourism, Arts and Culture: Path to Recover”.

Noting that the importance of promoting our culture and heritage cannot be overemphasised, Bonu said “In the last two years, the administration has engaged in series of activities that are deliberately structured towards positioning the State as a major tourism hub in Africa, where private individuals and institutions can confidently invest their resources in advancing the tourism and entertainment sector”.

While urging private individuals and necessary stakeholders to support and partner with the State government in realising the dream of making Lagos the tourism hub of Africa and the World at large, Bonu assured them of a conducive environment for making the dream a reality.

In his remarks, the Director/Chief Executive Officer, Council for Arts and Culture, Mr. Oladusi Komolafe, explained that the World Culture Day has been set aside to be celebrated annually on May 21st to utilise cultural diversity for peaceful dialogue and development.

Komolafe restated the agency’s commitment to always promote, propagate and preserve the cultural heritage of the people of Lagos State through dance, theatre, peculiar arts and crafts as tools for sustaining the love of culture, while boosting tourism.

Also speaking, a guest speaker and Professor of Theatre Arts and Music, Lagos State University, LASU, Professor Tunji Azeez, opined that the devastating effects of the pandemic almost crippled the tourism sector across the world.

He encouraged the government to support the State Council for Arts and Culture, through prioritised funding, to enable the Agency perform effectively as the bedrock of sustainable domestic and international tourism since its activities interprete the culture of Lagos.
