UK BASED TOWN PLANNERS TRAIN LASPPPA ON PLANNING PROCESS
As part of efforts to improve knowledge of international best practices in physical planning processes, officials of the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) have been exposed to the United Kingdom’s Planning Process.
Addressing participants at the training session, the General Manager of LASPPPA, Tpl. Kehinde Osinaike, said that despite the impressive methodology already adopted by the Agency in carrying out its duties, there is still room for improvement and the only way to catch up with trends in the profession is to borrow a leaf from other developed climes.
The essence of the training, according to the General Manager, is to take a cue from how physical planning activities are carried out by the UK Government, juxtapose their concept with ours and see possibilities of localising some of their strategies and embracing their methods where applicable.
Tpl Osinaike said: “What we are doing is a form of knowledge sharing, which is a key path to growth. It is the same way we have some States within Nigeria visit our agency and other Lagos State Government offices to understudy our processes to replicate the same in their various States”.
He assured the participants that there will be more opportunities for training and learning, saying that with the dynamic nature of physical planning activities as well as the introduction of new technologies and methods into the built sector, the processes adopted by the agency can only get better with knowledge sharing.
Stating that human capacity development is one of his integral plans for the Authority, Tpl. Osinaike informed that one way to achieve the objective is by doing a comparative analysis with developed countries like the United Kingdom, known as a leader when it comes to physical planning.
One of the lecturers, Tpl Gbenga Adenegan, MNITP, stated at the end of the session that he was greatly impressed by the level of professionalism of LASPPPA Town Planners and their reforms in ensuring the implementation of Town Planning Laws in all Physical Developments in the State.
He further urged stakeholders in the built sector to make it a norm to abide by Town Planning Laws and stipulations, so that Nigeria and Lagos State in particular can experience and enjoy the benefits of the level of orderly physical development in the more developed climes.
