ORILE-AGEGE GENERAL HOSPITAL CULTIVATES A POSITIVE, MOTIVATED, COMPETENT WORKFORCE – MEDICAL DIRECTOR

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of Orile-Agege General Hospital, Dr. Sola Pitan, said that the hospital is determined to create a positive, motivated and competent workforce with enhanced service delivery to the people of Orile-Agege and its environs.

Dr. Pitan stated this at a maiden two-day Strategic Management Retreat of the hospital held recently at the Dover Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, with the theme “Dynamic Leadership and Governance Structure for Public Hospital: Shifting the Paradigm for Orile-Agege General Hospital”.

“The demand to transform and scale up health professionals’ education, training and capacity are thus crucial to creating a positive, motivated and competent workforce. This will, in turn, create an enviable service delivery culture that is in line with international best practices thus improving both patient and provider satisfaction”, he said.

According to Pitan, the 2021 strategic management retreat is in line with the second pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda and was geared towards elevating Orile-Agege General Hospital to a higher paradigm of service delivery management.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, he said, has charged professionals in the health sector in Lagos State to provide optimum service to the people, stressing that “We must, therefore, improve on the management of our patients and provide an efficient service delivery through the incorporation of new and modern technology in tandem with international best practices”.

Disclosing that the new slogan of the hospital is “A Nsaajo Nibi”,  Dr. Pitan maintained that Lagos hospitals are now different from what they were because of improvement in service delivery within the healthcare system of Lagos State since the inception of the present administration.  

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Mobolaji Olukoya, Commissioner II of the Health Service Commission, said in Orile-Agege General Hospital there are great leaders and capable hands that have turned the hospital into a friendly atmosphere with a serene environment.

His words: “In our health sector, we are making progress as there is a shift in a departure from what it used to be. The government has invested heavily in the area of human capacity development and upgraded our various facilities in all general hospitals. This has resulted in a high influx of people seeking medical attention in public hospitals”.

He said the Health Service Commission, which is in charge of various public hospitals in Lagos State, is very much concerned with human resources development, hence the need for the strategic management retreat.

Dr. Olukoya, therefore, charged the participants at the retreat to take various papers delivered as a way to improve their professional skills in the management of their health institutions.

In his goodwill message, the Permanent Secretary, Health Service Commission, Dr. Ademuyiwa Eniayewun, thanked the hospital management for organising the retreat, stressing that the Commission is doing a lot to re-orientate staff and imbibe service culture in various hospitals in Lagos State.

“The most important asset in the health system is the human resource. Despite heavy equipment in our various hospitals, we still need a committed workforce to use them and give the right diagnosis. The human resource in our various hospitals cannot be overemphasised”, he said.

Dr. Yinka Otepola, Deputy Director, Medical Services (DDMS), Health Service Commission, delivered a paper on ‘Strategic Management Concept for Excellent Service Delivery in Public Hospitals’ while Dr. Ibironke Dada, Programme Director, SafeCare PharmAccess Foundation took participants through ‘Standardisation of Patient Care and its Implication for Patient Safety’.

Other papers delivered include ‘Achieving Excellence in Customer Care’ and ‘Safe Care Quality Improvement Plan for Orile-Agege General Hospital, amongst others.
