OGUN ASSEMBLY APPEALS TO ABIODUN TO APPOINT NEW ENVIRONMENT COMMISSIONER |Blissful Affairs Online

OGUN ASSEMBLY APPEALS TO ABIODUN TO APPOINT NEW ENVIRONMENT COMMISSIONER
Concerned by the role of the State Ministry of Environment at ensuring a cleaner, healthier, safe and sustainable environment, the State House of Assembly has urged the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun to appoint another substantive Commissioner for the Ministry.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, made the apppeal while responding to the submission of a member representing Yewa North II and the Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Wahab Haruna, who intimidated the Assembly on the need to fill the vacuum created by the absence of a political head for the Ministry, which had been affecting some of the programmes, performances and output of the Ministry .
Oluomo while clarifying that the appointment of political office holders remained the prerogative of the State Governor, but having considered the need to the swiftly move to ensure the promotion of safe and healthy environment, there was need for the appointment of a new State Commissioner to take charge of the Ministry.
Such appointment, the Speaker added would allow for a more robust coordination and administration of the Ministry towards harnessing all strategies in tackling all environmental hazards including flash flood alert which had since been issued by Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).
Calling for an improved efforts and synergy amongst related agencies handling environmental issues to reduce the adverse effects of the perennial flooding in some parts of the State, Oluomo equally admonished residents to adopt an attitudinal change by not dumping refuse in drainage channels or erecting structures on water ways, just as he urged those living on plain level prone to flooding to relocate in line with NIMET advice.
Earlier, Haruna stated that the Ministry which had been without a Commissioner for about six months required a substantive Commissioner to achieve optimum performance.
OGHA PASSES BILL TO CHANGE NAME OF TASCE, OTHER, AS LAWMAKERS RENDER STEWARDSHIP
Ogun State House of Assembly has passed two bills including the one seeking to alter the nomenclature of the Tai Solarin College of Education to the Sikiru Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology, Omu-Ajose Law, 2021 and the State Fiscal Responsibility Commission (Amendment) Law, 2021 barely forty-eight hours after the two bills scaled second reading on the floor of the House.
The bills titled,” HB.NO 066/OG/2021- The Sikiru Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology, Omu-Ajose Law, 2021 and H.B. No. 065/OG/2021- The Ogun State Fiscal Responsibility Commission (Amendment) Law, 2021 at a plenary presided over by Speaker Olakunle Oluomo.
The passage of the bills was meant to put in place legislations targeted at addressing the identity challenge being faced by the college of education in accessing intervention funds, while broading its scope and operations as well as positioning the institution for better academic performance, just as the bill on fiscal responsibility commission would ensure prudent management of the State’s resources, thereby achieving greater accountability and transparency in fiscal operations.
The passage of the bills followed the separate presentations of the reports of the Committee on Education, Science and Technology by the Chairman, Adeyemi Ademuyiwa, as well as his Finance and Appropriation counterpart, Kunle Sobukanla, who equally moved the motions for their adoption, which were seconded respectively by Honourables Adegoke Adeyanju and Ganiyu Oyedeji and supported by the whole House; through a voice vote, after which the bills were later read and adopted Clause by clause by the Committee of the Whole House.
Subsequently, the motion for the third reading of the bills was moved by the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by Ademuyiwa and Abdul Bashir Oladunjoye respectively; after which the Deputy Clerk of the House, Mrs. Funmi Adeyemi, took the third reading of the bills before the lawmakers.
Responding, Speaker Oluomo, directed that the clean copies of the bills be forwarded to the Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for his assent.
In another development, the State lawmakers from Ogun Central Senatorial District have urged Governor Abiodun to set out plans towards ensuring the continuation of channelization of waterways with a view to averting loss of property to flashfloods as rainy season was reaching its peak.
The lawmakers also appreciated the State Governor for his strides in infrastructural development, education, health and agriculture amongst others, while commending him and the Speaker for their exemplary leadership styles, they also lauded their respective political leaders and constituents for their support for the successes so far recorded.
The members including Honourables Modupe Mujota, Adeyemi Ademuyiwa, Ganiyu Oyedeji, Yusuf Amosun, Oludaisi Elemide and another member from Ogun West, who represents Ipokia/Idiroko State Constituency, Sikiratu Ajibola solicited for more infrastructural projects, especially road construction and rehabilitation in their respective constituencies, just as they unanimously sought for the immediate release of their constituency projects fund for the implementation of complementary projects in their constituencies.
