The newly elected executive members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State Chapter, have paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Professor Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo.

Speaking while welcoming the members, Prof. Fabamwo said that the NMA has always been a saving grace for doctors whenever their rights are trampled upon and expressed his joy for the visit, being a former Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Association in Lagos State.

The CMD emphasised the importance of the Association saying, “nobody gives you anything on a platter of gold in this part of the world. I hope the body will continue to look out for the interest of doctors. I believe in the dignity of our profession and I keep teaching doctors to respect and comport themselves regardless of what is happening in the world”.

On the request for clinical duty allowance and hazard allowance for honorary consultants, he assured the team that names of the honorary consultants affected have been forwarded to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, for payment of the hazard allowances, adding that he is continuously making efforts on the provision of PPEs for the frontline health workers.

He also told the executives that the hospital has organised a monthly webinar for health workers to be sensitised about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Lagos NMA, Dr. Adetunji Adenekan, commended the CMD for his open-door policy, the urgent response to the welfare of doctors, the appointment of more honorary consultants, adequate provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as well as his assistance to the Lagos State Government in the fight against COVID-19.

Dr. Adenekan, however, appealed to Prof. Fabamwo to help facilitate clinical duty allowance, hazard allowance for honorary consultants and provision of a secretariat for the Association.
