LASPA SOLICITS CITIZENS’ SUPPORT TO ADDRESS PARKING-INDUCED TRAFFIC IN LAGOS
The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) has solicited the support of citizens in its quest to regulate all forms of illegal parking which impedes the free flow of traffic.
The General Manager of LASPA, Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, made the plea while speaking on the mandate of her agency, noting that parking problems have been one of the lingering issues affecting the socio-economic development of Lagos.
According to her, the State Government can no longer fold its arms in the face of flagrant abuse of parking spaces by residents, hence the need for a holistic approach towards proferring necessary policies to regulate the causes and effects.
Disclosing that the agency has a vision of delivering a world-class parking scheme for residents in the State, Mrs. Adelabu stated that in line with the Traffic Management and Transportation Pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda, parking space issues would be addressed to reduce travel time on Lagos roads in the short and long term.
She maintained that the imbalance between parking demands and available parking spaces has been the main reason for the metropolis’ parking problems, which has greatly contributed to traffic congestion, traffic accidents and environmental pollution.
Emphasising the agency’s commitment to addressing the protracted problem, the General Manager maintained that LASPA is determined to optimise the available street parking spaces and setback options. This is in addition to registering existing private parks operators to maximise urban public spaces towards finding lasting solutions to parking-induced traffic.
Mrs. Adelabu also revealed that while the State Government is set to transform the parking infrastructure within the metropolis, there is a need for the provision of real-time parking information for vehicle owners to improve the overall quality of the parking system in Lagos.
While urging Lagosians to shun any act of indiscriminate parking that has continued to exacerbate the traffic situation across the metropolis, the LASPA Boss called on all park operators (commercial and non-commercial) to register with the agency for operating permits, adding that the enforcement which was earlier slated for February 2022 has been shifted to 1st March 2022 to give room for further conformity and adherence.
