LASG, WORLD BANK DISCUSS IMPLEMENTATION PATHWAYS FOR DPV ELECTRICITY SYSTEM
The Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, in conjunction with World Bank, has organised a workshop to discuss the framework for the implementation of Distributed Photovoltaics (DPV) electricity system in Lagos State.
In his opening remarks, Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Olalere Odusote, stated that the objective of the session was to discuss the pathways for realising the Lagos ambition of achieving One-Gigawatt (GW) of installed Photovoltaics (PV) capacity by Y2030 with a proposed mix of 60% commercial and industrial, 20% residential and 20% government-owned buildings.
He affirmed Lagos State’s commitment to addressing the demand-grid supply deficit, which is currently estimated at 33-43 TWh (83% of total demand), stressing that one of the potential solutions being considered is the use of rooftop solar.
Odusote emphasised that the Ministry would incorporate the feedback from stakeholders at the workshop and leverage the same in developing a detailed project design document to guide its implementation.
The World Bank Acting Regional Director for Infrastructure, West and Central Africa, Ashish Khanna said: “There is a unique opportunity for Lagos to lead the way for solar adoption in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa, by demonstrating a model for distributed PV in urban Africa that provides affordable and reliable electricity”.
Discussions at the event attended by key actors across the industry value chain, comprising over 70 participants including PV developers, solar aggregators, commercial banks, development finance institutions and Fintechs among others, centred on the financing structure, operating framework and the institutional arrangements required to achieve the State’s ambition.
Participants were of the opinion that the State Government’s focus is achievable, just as they expressed readiness to work with the present administration to realise its set goals and objectives.
