LASG URGES CITIZENS TO EMBRACE PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE
The Lagos State Government, through the Public Advice Centre (PAC), has charged citizens to embrace peaceful co-existence and be committed to the establishment of a non-violent society.
The Director, Lagos State Public Advice Centre, Mr. Tunji Dawodu, gave the advice at a sensitisation campaign organised for the residents of Olorunda Local Council Development Area of the State.
Dawodu, who led the outreach team to the community, revealed that the sensitisation programme is part of PAC’s efforts to educate and enlighten Lagosians on their role in promoting a harmonious society where progress and development can thrive.
The Director further explained that the establishment of the Public Advice Centre was to serve as the first port of call for citizens in distress and those seeking information and advice on their rights and responsibilities.
According to him, “In every human society, disputes and controversies are inevitable, and as a progressive government, we must continue to seek for a positive way to manage these challenges and make the society peaceful and better”.
He declared that the State Government has resolved to enlighten the citizens on the appropriate steps to take or avoid so as to resolve some of the recurrent issues in the society as the present administration is committed to due diligence and fairness in resolving issues.
In his words: “Peculiar issues in our society such as a marital dispute, tenancy controversies, property management, environmental-related matters as well as family and inheritance issues should be nipped in the bud before they escalate into unmanageable proportions, thereby threatening societal peace”.
The Director emphasised that the Centre offers free legal advice on many issues, but special cases are referred to other appropriate agencies of the Lagos State Government which PAC follows up until they are totally resolved.
“Special cases are referred to other agencies of government such as the Office of the Public Defender (OPD), Citizens Mediation Centre (CMC), Special Taskforce on Land Grabbers, Administrator-General and Public Trustee, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) amongst others.
While urging members of the community to always seek alternative dispute resolution channels provided by the government, the Director emphasised the need for people to shun violence and be law-abiding.
The leadership of the community applauded the State Government for the programme and attested to the free legal services and timely resolution of issues by the Centre, stressing that the Community Development Association would continue to preach peace and harmony to the inhabitants.
