LASG, UNFPA COLLABORATE ON ADOLESCENT SEXUAL REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH, GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
The Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development has collaborated with the United Nations Fund for Population Agency (UNFPA) to organise a capacity-building programme for School Counselors in order to promote response and management of Adolescent Sexual Reproductive (ASRH) and Health and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the State.
In his welcome address at the training programme, held in the State Treasury Resource Centre, Ikeja, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Ayoola Olugbenga Aina stated that the workshop was convened to provide knowledge on ways to address to dehumanising effects of sexual and gender-based violence among students.
Dr. Aina, represented at the event by the Director of Youth Department, Mr. Abdulateef Saka, said the Adolescence Sexual Reproductive Health education needs to be imparted to adolescents as they transition to adults.
Explaining the rationale for organising sessions for teachers, Dr. Aina averred that their role is very important because students are guided and moulded by the knowledge provided through academics.
In their various presentations, the facilitators Mrs. Bose Deji-Oderinde, Mrs. Modupeola Sahid-Adebambo and Mr. Folorunso J. Viavonu, who are all Child Protection Experts and Social Workers, took the participants on topics such as ‘Overview of Domestic and Sexual Violence/Abuse Amongst Students and Young People’; ‘Overview of Child Protection Policy’ and ‘Roles of the Society in the Prevention/Management of Child Abuse’, respectively.
The capacity-building programme attracted 40 participants from different schools in the State’s Educational District III.
