The Lagos State Government has charged teachers to bring more innovations that will make learning fun and interesting for students in schools, just as it maintained that the present administration will continue to provide intellectual fora and workshops to enhance performance in all schools.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Abayomi Abolaji, stated this at the Annual Seminar/Workshop for Music, Drama Teachers and Desk Officers in Secondary Schools across the State, held on Friday at the Ministry of Education, Co-Curricular Services Division, Akoka.
He disclosed that the State Government has approved continuous training programmes and seminars to build the capacity of teachers as well as granting them access to various platforms for exposure to new trends and ways of improving teaching and learning outcomes.
Abolaji emphasised the importance of improved skills and stressed the commitment of the present administration to ensuring that the education sector is meeting the 21st Century demands of learning, through huge investment in the growth of the sector.
While noting that teaching is a lifelong experience and teachers need to be updated with the requisite skills to meet up with world demand for education, he charged the teachers to maximise the opportunity of the programme to sharpen their teaching skills in the arts field.
He added that entertainment is growing rapidly and the children have various skills and talents which needs to be stimulated, saying “I am positive that we have a future that is bright with the talents and skills of our school children being discovered on regular basis. Our arts and craft industry is growing by the day, yet there is still a large market waiting to be exploited by our students and we have to guide them accordingly”.
Earlier, the Director of Co-Curricular Services Division of the Ministry, Mrs. Olubunmi Sosanya, opined that the State government has continued to provide various opportunities for the children to display their skills and talents, emphasising that this has prompted the training of teachers to impart knowledge to their students in drama, music and other art displays.
Appreciating the State Government, one of the facilitators and an Associate Professor, Department of Creative Arts, University of Lagos, Dr. Albert Oikhelome, commended the initiative of training teachers in the field of music and drama, adding that art is a tool for social change in Nigeria and can promote inter-ethnic relationship, religious tolerance and sustenance of democracy.
