LASG TO INTERNAL AUDITORS: BE INDEPENDENT, FAIR

The Lagos State Office of Internal Audit has identified independence as one of the cardinal hallmarks of Auditors within the public sector, stressing that the administration of Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu will continue to encourage and support the independence of Auditors in order to achieve the State Government’s vision.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Internal Audit, Mr. Abayomi Oluyomi, gave the assurance on Wednesday at the 14th Annual Internal Auditors workshop, held at the Imperial Hall, Otunba Jobi Fele Way CBD, Alausa, Ikeja.

The Special Adviser also urged Internal Auditors within the employ of the State Government to be diligent, transparent and truthful while discharging their duties.

Oluyomi, in his keynote address at the event, advised the Internal Auditors to take advantage of the internet and other necessary tools to constantly upgrade their skills for more relevance in their profession.

“Auditors are the cornerstone of the public sector, we are an integral part of the governance, hence the need to up our skills and ensure we discharge our duties properly”, he stated.

While explaining the importance of being a good Auditor, Oluyomi said Internal Auditors need to be skilful and possess appropriate work ethics in addition to acquiring digital competence, emotional intelligence and communication skills among others.

Speaking on the theme of the workshop “Redefining Independence, Professionalism and Integrity as an Imperative of Lagos State Governance Structure”, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Internal Audit, Mrs. Olusola Oduguwa, urged the Internal Auditors to be diligent, transparent and accountable while discharging their duties.

“In line with the theme of the workshop, as Internal Auditors, you are expected to be independent in the discharge of your duties in your respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, which implies that you need to perform your duties without fear or favour”, she said.

According to her, integrity should be the watchword of every Internal Auditor and should not be compromised alongside professionalism, honesty, fair dealing and truthfulness while performing their duties.

She acknowledged the interest of Governor Sanwo-Olu in ensuring that Auditors discharge their duties without fair or favour to any party, stressing that this was manifested in the approval granted for the upgrade of the Audit Department to an Office headed by a Permanent Secretary earlier in the year.

In his paper presentation titled: “Emotional Intelligence Strategies for Managing Your Boss”, the Permanent Secretary, Local Government Service Commission, Mr. Abiodun Bamgboye, advised Internal Auditors to develop good working relationships with their bosses by being sensitive to their emotions.

His words: “Study your bosses, understand them, know the best time to approach them and do not take advantage of their liberality”.
