LASCON CALLS FOR MORE INVESTMENT IN NURSING PROFESSION

The Provost, Lagos State College of Nursing (LASCON), Igando, Mrs. Oyefunso Orenuga, has called on governments at all levels to increase their investments in the training of Nurses and the Nursing Profession.

Mrs. Orenuga made the call in a presentation titled: “Nurses: A Voice To Lead, Invest In Nursing and Rights To Secure Global Health”, at the Year 2022 International Nurses’ Week Celebration organised by the General Hospital, Ifako-Ijaiye, adding that any investment in the nursing profession is bound to benefit the populace.

According to the Provost, nurses are part and parcel of every community, health facility, school and industry because they play essential roles in educating the public on the prevention of various injuries and illnesses. They also care for and participate in the rehabilitation of ailing patients in healthcare delivery.

Her words: “Nurses are frontline workers and key players in the promotion of a healthy society, disease prevention, caring for the wellbeing of patients and the backbone of all healthcare systems worldwide. However, the glaring shortage of Nurses around the globe is affecting the delivery of adequate healthcare for the people. As such, there is a need to invest more in the training of nurses and nursing practice to bridge the gap”.

Orenuga outlined some of the ways that the Nursing Profession can be improved including the continuous investment in the education and training of nurses, the creation of more specialised areas in nursing practice and equipping health facilities with modern technology tools, among others.

The Chairman, National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), General Hospital Ifako-Ijaiye Chapter, Mrs. Adeola Omodele, noted that nurses are the largest group in the healthcare profession, stating that their preventive, promotive and restorative interventions in maintaining optimal health for the populace cannot be overemphasised.

She further observed that more investment in the education of nurses and the profession would lead to a significant reduction in morbidity and mortality rates across the world, stressing that nurses are very committed to discharging their duties and improving healthcare service delivery.
