LAGOS TRAINS UNIFIED LOCAL GOVERNMENT DIRECTORS ON STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP
The Lagos State Local Government Establishments Training and Pensions (LGET&P) has organised a two-day training workshop for Directors on Grade Levels 15 to 17 across the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas on strategic leadership.
Declaring open the workshop held at NECA House Conference Hall, Agidingbi, Ikeja, on Tuesday, the Chairman, Local Government Service Commission, Mr. Kamal Baiyewu, thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for graciously granting the approval for the strategic leadership programme.
The training, he said, would enable the participants to extend the knowledge acquired to other levels officers in their respective local governments, adding that the workshop would also bring about synergy between the lower and the senior cadres to achieve the same goal for development of the local government system.
“Now that the government has trained you, it is expected that the acquired knowledge from this training programme is reflected in your work at your various duty posts. The commission would not compromise standard in the Unified Local Government Service of Lagos State”, Bayewu said.
The Chairman explained that the Commission has promoted 3650 staff in Y2021, while the list for those on advancement and conversion would soon be released to encourage officers to perform better and increase the productivity of staff in the local government areas.
While adding that the list of those on disciplinary action will also be released to serve as a lesson to others, Baiyewu promised participants that the Commission was fully behind them in ensuring that whatever they learnt from the training is adequately reflected in their jobs as leaders and ambassadors of the LGET&P in their various local governments.
According to him, the Commission would continue to interact with the political office holders, monitor and train various local government workforce and ensure the political heads see to the welfare of staff.
He thanked the Chairmen of the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas for lending their support to the training.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Local Government Establishments, Training and Pensions Office, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa, said the strategic leadership training for Directors is very timely and deliberate.
In her words: “You are the strategists in your various local governments, you must be equipped with the right skills and attitude to transform the promises of the political appointees of the various local governments. Being the engine room of the various local governments, you must know how to develop various policies and objectives”.
“You are among the leaders in the Unified Local Government Service. You must have what it takes to help political appointees to achieve their objectives. As leaders also, you must have effective communication and be in tune with what the aims and objectives of your leaders are and find ways and means to achieve those objectives”, she added.
Mrs. Bolarinwa stated that the training will also be extended to other cadres on Grade Levels 07-14, stressing that at the end of the training exercise over 550 officers on GLs 07-17 would have been trained across the Unified Local Government Service.
The Permanent Secretary, therefore, urged participants to listen attentively to the various lectures that would be delivered over the two-day interactive and intense learning sessions, noting that the essence of the training is to learn, unlearn and relearn.
