IEA Looks Into Ammonia Production to Achieve Net-Zero Emissions

The world must adopt technologies to reduce the carbon dioxide footprint of ammonia production as it works to achieve global net-zero commitments, the International Energy Agency said in a report released Monday.

The IEA’s Ammonia Technology Roadmap details pathways for more sustainable ammonia production and looks at the future of the ammonia industry given the energy transition.

Ammonia production accounts for about 2% of total final energy consumption, virtually all from fossil fuels, resulting in a CO2 footprint equal to the total emissions of South Africa’s energy system, the IEA said.

In the Stated Policies Scenario, the IEA sees current trends continuing as the industry makes small improvements but falls short of a sustainable trajectory.

In the Sustainable Development Scenario, the sector is seen to adopt technologies and policies allowing it to move toward Paris Agreement goals, while the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario details a path compatible with reaching net-zero emissions for the global energy system by 2050, the IEA said.

“The world will need more ammonia but cannot afford the emissions that come with its production,” said Timur Gul, head of the IEA’s Energy Technology Policy Division. # IEA Looks Into Ammonia Production to Achieve Net-Zero Emissions
