FLOODING: OGUN TO ENGAGE FG ON COMMENCEMENT OF ECOLOGICAL PROJECTS
Committed to averting the adverse effects of perennial flooding in some parts of Ogun State, the State Ministry of Environment says, the State Government is engaging the Federal Government on the need to ensure the speedy commencement of the ecological projects in Ilaro and Ijebu-Ode as recently approved by the Federal Executive Council.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Ola Oresanya, disclosed this while presenting the half year budget performance of the Ministry before members of the State House of Assembly Conmittee on Environment led by Hon. Wahab Haruna at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Oresanya explained that the State had raised a delegation to engage the Federal Government through appropriate agencies on the need to speed up the mobilization of contractors to the two sites, while efforts were in top gear to collate other areas for the attention of the Federal Government.
The Special Adviser pointed out that the ministry was working within available resources to ensure desilting of drainage channels, cleaning of stream paths and erosion control in towns across the State, adding that the Ministry in collaboration with other relevant agencies was poised to curb indiscriminate dumping of refuse in non- designated places, especially highways and drainage channels.
Other members of the Committee including Honourables Ademuyiwa Adeyemi, Kemi Oduwole, Kunle Sobunkanla and Solomon Osho charged the ministry to redouble it efforts at averting impending flooding in any part of the State, with increasing enlightenment programmes to the residents on the benefits of promoting a safe and conducive environment.
The State Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investments presented its mid-year budget performance with an assurance that it would improve on measures towards curbing illegal mining and mineral exploitation in all parts of the State.
The Commissioner in charge of the Ministry, Mrs. Kikelomo Longe, stated that such measures were part of the ministry’s holistic implementation of policies to enhance industrial and commercial growth through effective exploitation and mapping of mineral resources in the State.
Other agencies, including the State Property and Investment Corporation (OPIC) the State Emergency Management Agency, State Agricultural and Multi-Purpose Credit Agency amongst others presented their budget performance before the lawmakers.
