FAKE NEWS INIMICAL TO NATION’S PEACE, STABILITY – OGUN SPEAKER
Ogun State House of Assembly has urged social media users in the State to be wary of the antics of the purveyors of fake news on social media platforms, as misinformation in whatever form is capable of creating fear in the minds of the people, which is detrimental to the peace and progress of the State and nation.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo stated this while responding to a member representing Odeda State Constituency, Oludaisi Elemide and his Yewa North II Counterpart, Wahab Haruna who both spoke under Personal Explanation at the plenary session held at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta
Oluomo, who condemned the rising spate of falsehood in the guise of news stories for public consumption, especially through broadcast messages, called on the people to always verify the contents of all their reports before conveying same to others.
This, he noted would assist in giving credible information to security agencies in responding to the rising spate of insecurity bedeviling the nation.
Commenting on the unlawful arrest and detention of a resident of Igbokofin, a border town in Yewa North Local Government area of the State, Dr. Kunle Garb, by the Beninoire security, the Speaker lauded the intervention of the State Government, especially on the engagement of the Federal Government to facilitate the immediate release of the activist.
He called on the residents of the area to continue to be peaceful and law-abiding, as government had already stepped into the matter.
Earlier in his presentation, Hon. Haruna informed the Assembly of the efforts of the State Government at facilitating the release of Dr. Garb, who was to be released last Thursday but still in the custody of the Beninoire.
On his part, Hon. Elemide lauded the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his immediate response in putting together stakeholders’ meeting to broker peace at Olokemeji village and the intervention of the State Command of the Nigeria Police Force which led to the restoration of peace and the combing of the forest reserve for the arrest of bandits operating within the area.
In another development, a member representing Obafemi/Owode State Consistency, Damilola Soneye has rendered his stewardship in his second anniversary speech during today’s plenary, with a call for the intervention of the State Government in rehabilitating some deplorable roads in Ofada and Adesan, his constituency.
Appreciating his constituents, colleague-lawmakers, political leaders, including former Governor Olusegun Osoba and Governor Dapo Abiodun for their leadership and exemplary roles, Soneye stated that he facilitated the re-construction of some collapsed bridges,
sponsored about 100 constituents to community leadership trainings annually and the payment of WAEC/JAMB registration fees of another 100 amongst others.
Also, Speaker Oluomo has directed the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to commence legislative activities on the petition presented by a member representing Ijebu-East State Constituency, Hon. Isaac Adams on behalf of Imobi Descendants Union against one Mr. Goriola Adeniyi Hassan on his purported claim to the Obaship stool at Imobi Ijebu.
