… Trains Students on Waste Recycling

The Lagos State Education District 1 has keyed into the Health and Environment initiative of the State Government with the establishment of a Recycling Club to encourage students to imbibe the habit of turning waste to wealth and reducing the menace of an unhealthy environment.

The Education District I Recycling Club which was flagged off last year by the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of the District, Barrister Titilayo Margaret Solarin, was an initiative aimed at introducing students to a sustainable source of income through recycling while also eradicating health and environmental hazards across schools within the district.

According to the Coordinating Chairman of the Recycling Club, Education District I, Mr. Oludare Ayinde Akinyode, “the establishment of the Club is to turn waste to wealth, reduce the menace of an unhealthy environment, empower the pupils and eradicate the health hazards in the entire District I Educational environment and Lagos State in general”.

According to him, the training workshop which is the 2nd edition held recently at Government Senior College, Agege, consists of students from Agege, Alimosho and Ifako-Ijaye areas of the District.

He said, “In all, we have about 75 Public Junior and Secondary Schools comprising 225 students and 80 teachers of Agege, Alimosho, and Ifako-Ijaye zones of Education District as beneficiaries of the Turning Waste to Wealth Workshop at no cost”.

The Coordinator emphasised that the Club’s goal runs in line with the Lagos State T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda, most especially on Health and Environment, which is hinged on improving the quality of the Environment and our public spaces in general.

He disclosed that competition has now been included as part of the workshop in order to sustain the interest participants and also promote healthy rivalry among the various participating schools.

The Recycling Club, Akinyode said, will immensely benefit students and provide an avenue for income through the conversion of waste materials to useful household items.

The event was attended by some non-governmental organisations such as the African Clean-up Initiative, Bead God recycle, Cascade Sustainability Foundation and Pearl Recycle, among several others.
