Dr. Israel Ovirih has been active in the finance world for over 33 years, having worked in the leading Nigerian Banks – GTBank, the then Oceanic Bank and later Equitorial Trust Bank (now part of Sterling Bank Plc). He helped midwifed financial advisory in development financing in Nigeria handling World Bank/IBRD/IDA Infrastructure Development Fund (IDF) and Health Systems (HSF) projects in sub-nationals including Yobe, Borno, Delta, Edo and Plateau in the early nineties, displaying an innate flair for strategic thinking, creativity and astute decision-making.
His initial foray in the early nineties saw him spearheading innovative financing for various NERFUND and AfDB sponsored projects across sectors like agribusiness, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, housing and infrastructure as well as educational sector. Dr. Israel Ovirih’s career at prominent financial institutions was characterized by a relentless pursuit of creative funding solutions aimed at enhancing customer value and streamlining private and public sectors project development.
One of his seminal contributions to the banking sector was the conception and implementation of financing for local content operators in the oil and gas as well as vessels and marine assets acquisitions under the Nigerian Cabotage regime of 2008 – 2014. His groundbreaking innovations leveraging on his flagship companies in Nigeria and the US – Banklink Africa and Nationwide Finance revolutionized financing for development for Nigerian Banks and indeed local content development for Sub-Sahara African countries.
Dr. Israel Ovirih’s leadership prowess was not confined to only the field of financial structures and financial engineering, but also the leveraging of disruptive technologies for African development and advancement through his continued investments in the tech-space since his MIT Sloan School of Business entrepreneurship program. He is also renowned for fostering a culture of inclusivity, collaboration, and empowerment within his teams. The zenith of Dr. Israel Ovirih’s financial journey culminated in his appointment as Technical Adviser by the Nigerian ShipOwners Association (NISA) for the enforcement of the various cabotage and tonnage policies of the Nigerian Government and the setting up of the Maritime Bank for Africa by the President Tinubu’s-led Government. This appointment is testament to his strategic foresight, exceptional leadership acumen, and a track record of unparalleled success in path-steering the financial industry towards new heights of prosperity for Nigerians and indeed Africa.
Moreover, Dr. Israel Ovirih’s commitment to corporate social responsibility was exemplary. He spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at financial literacy programs for underprivileged communities, fostering economic empowerment and driving sustainable growth beyond the realms of banking transactions. He endowed since the year 2020, the highest annual prize of N1.0 million for the best overall graduating student in his alma mater – Dr. Israel Ovirih’s Prize for the best graduating student who has contributed not just in academics, but to community life in Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti.
