BINS IN HOMES, SOLUTION TO LAGOS ISLAND WASTE ISSUES – ODUMBONI

The Managing Director/CEO of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, has challenged households within Lagos Island to acquire waste bins that will aid the easy evacuation of waste.

He threw the challenge during a stakeholder meeting organised by LAWMA, at Iso Onigari, Lagos Island West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), where he insisted that the real problem behind the waste mess around the Island is the lack of waste bins in respective homes.

Odumboni said: “The problem with waste management on the Island here is the non-availability of waste bins in households. If you have waste bins, you can properly containerise your waste and there will be no litter everywhere. This will make evacuation easier and the environment will be clean. Lagos Island cannot be left this way, we have to make a change”.

Explaining that it is not mandatory for residents to purchase LAWMA bins, the General Manager maintained that the use of containers for proper packaging of waste is non-negotiable.

Responding, the Chairman of the LCDA, represented by Mr. Mohammed Eshilokun, hinted at the plan to recruit youths as guards to clear the drainage channels around the Island, adding that it was a way of empowering the youths and keeping the environment clean.

“We have recruited youths here as drainage guards to clear our gutters. This will help to frequently desilt the drainage channels and improve our environment. We are also appealing to the government to help find a lasting solution to environmental pollution within the Council,” he stated.

LAWMA’s Executive Director, Finance, Mr. Kunle Adebiyi and Chief Technical Officer, Dr. Olorunwa Tijani, enjoined residents to enhance environment-friendly habits and stop patronising cart pushers.

The Chairman, Community Development Committee for Lagos Island West LCDA, Chief Abu Elemoro, commended LAWMA for the stakeholders’ meeting and called for the continuation of such consultation to sustain public awareness on the benefits of waste containerisation.

Also present were Iyaloja General, Lagos Island West; Alhaja Rasikat Abeje Lasisi, Supervisor for the Environment; Alhaji Audu Atanda, AGM Performance Management; Mrs. Tawa Oyekanmi, AGM West District; and Mr. Akinwale Adeshina, among others.
