MATHEMATICS ASSOCIATION HONOURS STUDENTS, PERMANENT SECRETARY
… Holds 25th Annual Conference, Awards Ceremony
The Mathematics Association of Nigeria (MAN) has presented an award to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Abayomi Abolaji, for his support, exemplary leadership and for contributing to the development of the Association.
MAN also recognised 12 students who excelled in the 2022 National and Lagos State Mathematics Olympiad and Quiz Competition during its 25th Annual Conference and Awards ceremony with the theme: “Building Strategy for the Understanding of Mathematics”, held recently at the Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium Alausa, Ikeja.
In her address at the occasion, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo urged mathematics teachers to make their teachings practical-based, saying that this will further assist the students in relating to the various mathematical topics.
She encouraged the Association to have peer learning Whatsapp groups for continuous learning, coaching and for exchange of concepts between the students and their teachers so that they can continue to learn from each other.
Her words: “They should teach and know how to integrate core and digital skills, creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and practical learning”.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Abolaji Abayomi congratulated the Mathematics Association of Nigeria (MAN) for carrying out various activities and programmes in Lagos State.
“Mathematics is an interesting subject which is only known to a few people. MAN is the most vibrant subject association in Lagos State going by the report about their various activities at both primary and secondary schools in the State. The association always have one programme or the other for the benefit of teachers and students of mathematics in Lagos State”, he said.
The theme of the event: “Building Strategy for the Understanding of Mathematics, according to the Permanent Secretary, is very apt because there is a need for teachers to adopt various strategies for solving various mathematics topics in their classes.
He enjoined the association to invite other executives of subjects association to their programmes so as to learn from each other and adopt various strategies of solving mathematics in line with the theme.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Mathematics Association of Nigeria (MAN), Lagos State Chapter, Dr. Nasirudeen Ayinde Malik, appreciated Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Abolaji Abayomi, all the six Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary; the Chairman, Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) and the Executive Secretary of LASTVEB for their support towards the 58th National Conference of the Association.
He said mathematics teachers, especially at primary and secondary schools, need further understanding of how to build strategies towards making mathematics teaching pleasurable to students.
According to him, “The award of excellence to the Permanent Secretary is in recognition of his support to the growth and development of mathematics teaching and learning”.
Also, the Chairman of the Planning Committee and also the Vice Chairman, MAN, Lagos State Chapter, Mrs. Odubolanle Okudipe thanked all dignitaries and members of the association for the success of the programmes and appreciated the students for their exemplary performance in both state and national competitions.
The Guest Speaker, Professor Olaoye Adetunji Abiola of the Department of Science and Technical Education, Lagos State University, outlined various strategies for the understanding of mathematics.
The high point of the occasion was the presentation of the award plaque and certificates of merit to awardees by the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo.
